Time..Where Does It Go?

Summer is here and my time feels so limited. As I am sure everyone is experiencing.

I honestly don't know how some people find time to write with kids, jobs, meetings, family outings, "I have to go here" kid things, and so forth and so on. It seems since summer started that my time disappears into whiffs of smoke.

Now that Perfection is finished, edited, and I really hope shining, I'm getting ready to start the second book in the series (no title as of yet) on Monday. But I have to go there and do this and that, my distractions of blogs and trying to keep up with agent and publishing news, I'm doing another beta read (which is something I really love doing)--oh...not to mention the fact my computer is in the living room and people come and flip on the television regardless of the crazy lady sitting in front of the computer clacking away on the keyboard--so I am forced to really have to set aside time to write.

I wish I could just pop up first thing in the morning all bright-eyed and bushy-tail (while everyone else is snoozing), and start typing, but unfortunately the gears in my head are barely moving. I tried it, can't do it. All I want to do is zombie-out while my neurons kick start into firing.

Anyway, I thought it would be fun for my fellow writers and blog readers to tell me what they do to schedule their time to include everyday distractions, family, work, exercise, chores, taxi driving, and whatever interferes with what you really want to do (which is write).

Maybe help can be found within the comments.

  1. I find time usually at lunch at work. It means eating and writing at my desk. If I don't get distracted by internet surfing, then this is helpful. I'm fortunate to work where there is a library, too, so I got a great done in a previous position but taking my laptop up to the library for 45 minutes and surprised myself by how much I got done. I also try to sit down at the desktop at home first thing after work. Hope to do some writing on the train, but the trip is really too short for anything serious, but still think it's worth a try.

  2. I have tried a schedule so many times it is ridiculous, I just hate them. What works best for me: if it needs doing do it now. I usually always have free time for writing. That's most days anyway.... When I don't allow the distractions of the internet.

  3. I only write at night after my three-year-old monkey has gone to bed. I've tried writing during the day, but that just becomes a battle. So we compromise.

  4. Thanks to several long years of insistence on my part that my writing time be honored, family and friends have learned to leave me alone between 4 and 6 in the afternoon. I keep a machete and a flamethrower under my desk for those who dare intrude!

  5. Wow..you are lucky Kim, my kids,or husband for that matter, see my writing as nothing than a hobby. When it's so much more to me.

If I ever am lucky enough to get published, I'm going to say ha ha ha ha!!!!! And then stick out my tongue in a dignified manner.

  6. I've always been an early riser, so I definitely do the early morning thing while my husband and son sleep. But trying to write late in the evening is nearly impossible. I just can't stay up late and keep thinking.
